Chinese expressive oil painting on figures first appeared in the early 1900s. With representatives Lin Fengmian, Guan Liang and a number of artists who had went to study abr-oad and opened up the East-meets-West road, expressive oil painting is able to emerge and develop in China which is influenced deeply by the traditional cultural idea. After entering into the 1980s, due to China’s ongoing reformance and opening up, a variety of art concepts rushed into China, traditional Chinese culture met certain impact, but also expressive oil painting had been further developed. In the 21st century, the global diversity of the situation of modern art formed, which made traditional Chinese culture encounter unprecedented challenges and opportunities. How to keep the Chinese unique artistic style while developing art is worth thinking about and exploring.The emergence and development of Chinese expressive oil painting on figures has its own theoretical basis and historical and cultural background. Its formation has a close relationship with Chinese painting spirit and intentionality merging into rational thinking of Confucianism, inactive ideas of Taoism, Zen thought of Buddhism. Chinese expressive oil painting on figures is different from the expressionism figure painting, because it has the nature of China’s unique expressionistic manner, with oil painting materials expressing interesting and humane nature of the Chinese painting. But in China it did not form a genre, oil development can only be regarded as a cultural phenomenon.The way of painting breaking away from the support of local traditional culture, like sourceless water, will eventually dry. This paper discusses the contemporary situation and the development of expressive oil painting on figures and the influence made by traditional Chinese culture.The paper studies some kinds of expression, thinking about how the Chinese artistic elements are used as well as how the Chinese intentionality is expressed in oil painting. There must be an uniqueness for modernization of different traditional culture, which needs us to make an accurate orientation for modern Chinese expressive oil painting on figures, build up and consummate our own painting theory and practical system and pay a high attention to this problem in a free, open artistic environment.
