Mei Guangdi was a controversial scholar who lived in the 1900’s. In China’s New Culture Movement, he was blamed for his protection of traditional Chinese culture and the classical Chinese, stamped as " conservative " and " pedantic ". Since he failed in the competition with the Radicals, Mei Guangdi gradually stepped down from the stage of history, leaving his academic thought forgotten. As a matter of fact, Mei Guangdi not only had a thorough knowledge of both western and Chinese learning, but also made contributions to the early spread of Chinese culture in western countries. A century later, with China’s rapidly growing economy and rising international stature, Chinese and traditional Chinese culture arouse the interest of foreigners. The upsurge of learning Chinese is springing up all over the world. However, native speakers do not seem to attached great importance to the study of their language, which cause people to worry about its long-term development.Therefore, the thesis looks back on Mei Guangdi’s language ideas and tries to find out their reasonable parts, then analyses their importance for the process of TCFL (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language) in the sight of language planning.Based on language planning theory, this thesis takes Mei Guangdi’s language ideas and education practice as a clue, which can be divided into three stages:the period of his studying abroad, the period of China’s New Culture Movement and the time of his serving in Zhejiang University. According to it, the thesis analyses the practical significances of Mei Guangdi’s language ideas on China’s language status planning, language corpus planning and the training of talented TCFL teachers.By analysing, this paper reaches the conclusion that it is a matter of great urgency to consolidate the position of our native language. The authority is expected to rise the status of Chinese, weakening the importance of English in our language life. Meanwhile, the authority should provide directions on the correctly use of the standard Chinese. In addition, the Chinese knowledge and language ability are as significant as teaching skills in the process of training talented TCFL teachers.
