Translator, as the main factor in translation activities, has long been marginalized.Since the 1970s, with the appearance of cultural turn, translation studies are placed ina broader cultural sphere, translation activities have got more and more attention, atthe same time, translator is not marginalized any more and the dominant position hasfinally been established.Traditional Chinese culture has created certain social environment andatmosphere for the survival of Chinese nation, formed a unique Chinese way ofthinking, aesthetic taste and cultural sedimentation, which shows characteristicsdifferent from Western culture, and each language gets life and nutrition from its ownculture, so we can not focus only on how the contents of one language can betranslated into another language, but also strive to express the two cultures in the wayof thinking and emotional expression habits. In the age of globalization, Chineseculture is still in an inadequate position of marginality, so we must endeavor to makethe values of Chinese culture recognized by the world, in which process translatorplays an important role.Poetry, as a treasure of traditional Chinese culture, can reflect or representChinese culture best. Owing to the long history of Chinese poetry, the workscontaining a lot of culture allusions can not be easily translated into foreign languages, therefore, the ideal translator in the English translation of poetry should be Chinese, not foreigners. Translator, as the main body in translation activities, should showmore subjectivity than those in literary translation and play out more initiative andcreativity in translation practice.Speaking of Xu Yuanchong, people will associate him with the Englishtranslation of classical poetry. He has translated classical Chinese literature, such asThe Book of Songs, Songs of the South, Three Hundred Tang poems, Song 300, intoAnglo- American verse, thus introducing the essence of Chinese culture to the world, opening the way of Chinese culture ascending the world’s literary throne, but hisachievement is far more than that, his innovations and achievements in translationtheories has pushed him into pinnacle of Chinese translation history. Xu, for his success in translation theory and practice, plays the translator’s subjectivity to anextreme. In the era of globalization, with the increase of China’s overall national strength, the influence of traditional Chinese culture is growing, and translator plays animportant role in the“going out”of traditional culture. This paper makes the culturalturn of translation studies and postcolonial theory as the basis, explains translator’ssubjectivity. From the point of promoting traditional Chinese culture, combined withXu’s translation theory, analyses the art and language style of English translation ofpoetry in the respect of words, sentences, phonology, texts, and states the impacts thatXu’s translation theory and practice has brought forth. In a word, translator’ssubjectivity plays an important role in carrying forward traditional culture andpromoting cultural development and prosperity.
