China has a long history with kinds of nations,so there aredifferent kinds of geographic names, and most of them aremeaningful and too many to count, which were used to give directionsand locations in ancient times but for us today, they contain plenty ofinformation. The researchers in different fields are trying to find outhiding information by doing lots of studies. This paper contains three parts:The first part shows the characters and classifications. They aredevided into innate character and culture character. Innate characterincludes directional function and social function. Culture characterincludes popularity, region, nations and stability. The geographicnames are based on nature and humanity. There are many placenames given according to nature, such as climate, topography, thesource of nature; the other names according to humanity, such asfamily, economy and architecture, etc.The first part shows the characters and classifications. There are many placenames given according to nature, such as climate, topography, thesource of nature; the other names according to humanity, such asfamily, economy and architecture, etc.The second part mainly demonstrates the character of humanitygeography. The geographic names are a kind of culture phenomenon, which contains the relationship between human and land, theindustries in different areas and so on.The last part mainly represents the trend and the studies of thespace distribution. Using ArcGIS spatial analysis software, will be thename of“Gazetteer of China"(1983) data entry into software chart, and analysis of the spatial distribution of place names. Themulti-layer superposition based on the geographical name densityclassification shows that with the increasing of geographical namedensities, the name gravity centers of different layers move from theNorthwest to the Southeast and have a tendency of becoming dense;the multi-layer clustering phenomenon of the Chinese toponymydistribution is obvious ,the toponymy distribution transits from thehigh density region to the low one on the whole, however, there arehigh density region in the low density area and vice versa. Havingcompared the Chinese toponymy density map with the topography, climate, rivers and population distribution map of china ,we found theplace name distribution trend to flat terrain, humid climate, Fiver-lakeintensive, and place names distribution and population geographicboundaries (Hu Huanyong line) results. Based on the study of placenames, reflects the human activity and geographical environment between effect intensity.
