In recent years’literary research, combining female image with nature and environment in works has become a new tendency, considering the various similarities in their experience and role in the development of human society. Emerging in the mid-1970s, the term "ecofeminism" was created under current pressure of ecological crisis and social crisis and had soon developed into a worldwide movement. It is a movement that sees a connection between the exploitation of the natural world and the subordination and oppression of women. Ecofeminism brings together elements of the feminist and green movements, while at the same time offering a challenge to both. The eco-feminism theory has provided a new and positive angle to re-appreciate the classics. This study will take the view points of ecofeminism as the basic analytical theory, focusing on the relationship between nature, women and the man-ruled society. The thesis composes of four parts. Chapter one gives a brief introduction of the book, its author and the emerging and development of ecofeminism theory. As the core part of the study, chapter two focuses on the similarity and inner connection in status and experience between the female protagonist and environment during the rapid industrialization in America. The third chapter analyses the causes of this phenomenon form cultural factors and social background. The last chapter sums up the study and its purpose, calling for more attention to women’s living standard and ecological protection.
