Cognitive Research On The "一A―B" Construction

As a common and specific structure in modern Chinese idioms,一A一Bconstruction has aroused broad attention from many scholars due to its uniquecharacteristics. They have delved into the syntactic and semantic features of thisconstruction on the basis of traditional philology. Some scholars have put attentionon cognitive mechanism of meaning constructing of idioms from perspectives ofConceptual Blending and Metaphor and Metonymy, however, few of them are inattempt to make deep analysis on a certain construction as一A一B from cognitivemechanism，and many efforts should be done to reach a systematic account, let alonethe support of database.CBM Model is proposed in this paper by integrating Construction Grammarand Conceptual Blending Theory with Metaphor and Metonymy as its internalmechanism. And107items under the construction of一A一B are excerpted fromThe Dictionary of Chinese Idioms in Sichuan Cishu publisher in2002and TheChinese Idioms Classification Dictionary in Hu Bei publisher in2008under unifiedquantitative explanation of CBM Model.There are five parts involved in this thesis paper:Chapter One focuses on the motivation, objectives, methodology, datacollection, and the layout of this thesis.Chapter Two reviews previous static studies on一A一B construction fromphilological and cognitive perspectives. Studies on the meaning of一, structural andsyntactic and semantic features and dynamic cognitive studies from ConceptualBlending theory and metaphor and metonymy are specifically listed. Also strengthsand weakness of those studies and reasonable solution of problems that have notsolved are respectively pointed out.Chapter Three proposes a new model-CBM model as the theoreticalframework to bridge the gap on the basis of previous theoretical studies on Construction Grammar and Conceptual Blending Theory with Metaphor andMetonymy as the internal mechanism.Chapter Four makes thorough analysis of107numeral idioms collected fromdictionaries through CBM model based on three classifications of those idioms.Chapter Five makes a conclusion and lists some contributions and limitation ofthis paper, and supplies suggestions for further studies on this construction.CBM Model provides a better solution for一A一B construction analysis. CGsupplies a relative reasonable explanation for construction building and specificconstructions. While it still leave some gaps in meaning construction and formation.CBT can bridge this gap in meaning elaboration, and its enumeration of meaningformation and subjective elements involved in this process further strengthens theexplanation power of CBM. The author has collected107一A一B expressionssupporting the analytic power of CBM to一A一B construction.
