Construction grammar was formed in the 1980s and 1990s on the basis of the criticism of the Chomsky language theory from cognitive grammar and other theories which include lattice grammar, frame semantics,Gestalt grammar, cognitive grammar, and central language driven phrasal grammar.Construction grammar focuses its study on the structure, advocating a combined study of form and meaning as well as structure and function, and regarding it as an inseparable unity of form and meaning.Constructional grammar is one of the most popular paradigms of contemporary cognitive linguistics. The establishment of construction grammar is closely related to the research background of the founders.Idioms are simple, stereotyped phrases or short sentences that have been used for a long time, and are a kind of fixed phrase with rich meaning and written color.Idioms, which occupy a large proportion in Chinese vocabulary system, are abundant in modern Chinese spoken and written language, and are an important usage in modern Chinese.TaoTeChing, one of the major classic works of Taoism,is fluent in language, rigorous in structure, incisive in words, and profound in thought, and has been the focus of research experts and scholars.TaoTeChing has only more than 5000 words, but it is strict in structure and brilliant in wording, including 57 idioms in total. From the perspective of construction grammar, the author of this thesis analyzes the structure and meaning of idioms in TaoTeChing based on Wiley's English version systematically, investigates the metaphorical and metonymic characteristics of some idioms and explores the characteristics of metaphor and metonymy reflected in Wiley's English Version of TaoTeChing, and also analyzes the characteristics and causes of these idioms, using taxonomy and inductive method. The author hopes that the study will provide some reference for similar studies in the future and can better promote the spreading and communication of Chinese traditional culture to the outside world.
