From the Yuan Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, Outlaws of the Marsh drama had been prevailing in the Chinese drama stage. Song Jiang, Li Kui and many other Heroes are warmly welcome among people by their hearts. Long-term since, Outlaws of the Marsh drama have not only spread widely in ordinary people, but also in many scholars. Outlaws of the Marsh drama focuses on chivalrous hero, who however are not the politicians active in the political arena but mostly the small minds, or even monks of robbers. Outlaws of the Marsh drama writer believed that a hero should not only exist in the government, but also out of the government.The content of the paper is divided into three main parts. The first part is going to introduce the evolution of the theme of Outlaws of the Marsh drama during the writing process of the book. The second part is an analysis of some typical heroic images in the Outlaws of the Marsh theme drama. The third part introduces the long history of chivalrous culture and analyzes the drama reflection of the culture of chivalry in the Yuan Dynasty Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, combined with the comparison between that culture and other types of classical opera. The paper, based on the heroic images in the Outlaws of the Marsh theme, deeply discusses the culture implied by the drama and the historic stream of chivalrousness, as well as the inherence and innovation of the culture of chivalry by Outlaws of the Marsh drama. Furthermore, this article tries to probe into the collective consciousness of Chinese and a common cultural psychology and aesthetic idea of the audience by reviewing the development of the form of the Outlaws of the Marsh theme. Consequently, we can reflect the return of the ancient Chinese traditional culture and the absence of the traditional culture in contemporary society.
