Early Gregorian Chant

Religion and music, as the two important parts in western civilization, promot thedevelopment of Western culture. And Christianity is the main religion in western world,from ancient times to present years, they all make full use of Christian music in theirwritings, not only Lai Aonan who is the Notre Dame’s of Medieval music times,Josquin of the Renaissance times, Bach of the classical period, but aslo Liszt, in theRomantic period. It proves that "the whole civilized western society is based on theChristian concept, and to move forward", so, in order to understand the inside of theChristian music,we should know of the history of it. Mr. Zhu Guangqian also said:"if not understanding Christianity completely, one can not get a overall even a partof western culture." we have to study the Gregorian chant, firstly, it is the mostimportant representatives of Christian music, secondly, it is the basement for thefollowing music theory, music form of notation and music study.In order to enable people to take a more in-depth understanding of Gregorianchant, the writer chose the Pentecost Mass as the study object, including the ritualfunction, lyrics, music, style, structure, melody, mode, range and other aspects ofPentecost Mass analysis of the twenty tracks.This thesis is divided into three chapters:The first chapter, Gregorian chant’s formation. The discussion is taken betweenformation of the Christian and unity of Gregorian chant. The second chapter, musicfeatures and applications of Gregorian chant. By doing some analysis on Gregorianchant’s melody, singing methods and applications, the Pentecost Mass’s study will beprepared. The second chapter, Pentecost mass’s coming. It is constituted of the twosections. Section I for the mass and the the structure of the mass, basing on thedefinition of mass, form and structure. Section II for the Pentecost mass. It includsbefore Mass and thanksgiving pray, and each part consists of ten tracks.
