| Red and black are colours with strong literary and cultural connotations andassociations. Drawing on a variety of resources based on both national andinternational researches, combined with Conceptual Integration Theory, this articleinvestigates and analyses the etymology and provenance of the various uses of thestructure ““redâ€/“blackâ€+Xâ€â€. It then goes on to study in depth certain uses of “redâ€and “black†as prefixes and considers the differences between the usage andconnotations thereof. This article comprises5chapters:Chapter1sets out the subject matter of the article and its purpose as well asintroducing the points of focus and methodology of analysis;Chapter2examines the use and the structure “redâ€+X, its characteristics andclassification both historically and in a modern day context. The connotations andimplications of the use of “red†as a prefix vary substantially, and the articledistinguishes among “lowâ€,“intermediate†and “high†levels of association;Chapter3in turn scrutinizes the use of the structure of modification “blackâ€+X inthe same manner as “red†in the preceding Chapter;Chapter4compares and contrasts the uses and meanings of the two prefixes,including the frequency and manner of use and the differences in their respectivesymbolic meanings in traditional Chinese culture;Chapter5sets out the article’s conclusions as well as suggestions for furtherresearch. |
