Research background:Suicide is the result of the interaction of multiple factors including psychology, society and biology. Suicide is a prominent social problem from the entire social point of view. Suicide has being paid more and more attention as an important medical and social problem. In recent years, with the development of society, scientific progress, the quickening pace of life, and the increasingly fierce competition, the stress of life and mentality is increasing, the conflicts within the family are increasing, suicide incidence is rising. Suicide is the world’s top10causes of death in many countries according to incomplete statistics; and there are nearly one million people died of suicide each year. Moreover, the absolute number of suicide deaths of China ranks first in the world, and committing suicide by taking poison ranks first. According to previous statistics,420cases of taking poison were treated in the department of emergency in a tertiary hospital of Binzhou city from February2009to December2010.All the patients were provided appropriate care and the suicide reasons were investigated from psychology, physiology and society, which lead to the attention of the whole society, to reduce the incidence of suicide,to save the lives of patients.Research objective:The research aims at analyzing from psychological, physical and social aspects comprehensively, objectively, systematically the status and influencing factors of attempted suicide patients in the department of emergency in a tertiary hospital of Binzhou city to provide the basis for preventing suicidal behavior.Materials and methods:300cases treated by the department of emergency in a tertiary hospital of Binzhou City were included in this research. A questionnaire was designed to find out the gender, age, personality, occupation, income, suicide reason, the mood before and after taking drugs and whether suicide again from the patients and their families. Suicide situation and influencing factors were analyzed through the survey results.Main results:Among300cases of attempted suicide patients by taking drugs female patients were more than males (1.38:1); suicide age below20years old were38patients,21to40were137patients,41to60were78patients, over61were47patients. The degree of the patients were that primary education were117patients, middle school education were126patients, high school education were9patients, secondary school education were42patients, college were6patients; the occupational amount of those patients were that farmers are177patients, workers were75patients, students were30patients, self-employed boss were9patients, others were9patients. Also, there were123patients introverted,83patients extroverted,45patients cheerful,52patients immature excitable; there were21patients felt social pressure too high,35were because of family economic burden,144were because of family dispute(such as divorce, trouble with others, arguing, etc.),47patients were because of motional setbacks problems,32patients were suffering from depression,11had old age syndrome (such as patients with cancer, cerebra-vascular disease, hypertensive heart disease and other chronic diseases etc),10were because of the emergencies; moreover, there were99suicide patients had depressed mood,41patients were alone,39patients were wronged, angry were85patients and enraged were36patients. There were41patients having idea that harm themselves to punish others,108patients thought that death is a relief,61patients thought that death can escape from reality,63 patients were impulse.12patients wanted to frighten someone and make someone to get rid of bad habits,15patients were really had enough of living; there were150patients regret after oral medication suicide,69patients were not,. There were62patients who could not bear the family,19patients realized life precious after waking up; there were165patients never will have impulsive behavior occur again,84patients might have, uncertain for30patients, but21patients clearly will have again.Conclusion and recommendations:Taking medication suicide is related to patients’sex, age, personality, occupation, income, emotion. And the number of female suicide is more than male; meanwhile, the rates of male suicide has increased than before; the largest number suicide patients were in21to40years old; and the majority are with low education, low income and introverted. The elementary and junior high school education amount the largest proportion in the suicide patients, which occupied81.0%of totally research patients. And among different occupations, farmers take the first ranks, which are up to59%(totally177). Moreover, taking medication suicide is more common in the people suffered from family disputes, family financial burden, emotional frustration and career development setbacks. Meantime, patients had poor mood when they suicide; and most of them had regret after being suicide. There were36%patients thought that death would be relief, there were50%patients had regret. Moreover, there were55%patients that committed suicide will not suicide;7%patients indicated will have again. The research suggest that everyone should strengthen education in general knowledge, establish a correct outlook on life, enhance people’s psychological defense and stress, have positive attitude to treat problem; at the same time, maintain a good social and normal relationships. On the other hand, the patients with introverted, lonely, sensitive and fragile characteristics should be guided from psychology. For the old patients, we should launch the universal concern them in order to enrich their elderly year’s life and provide a good social atmosphere; so they could have confidence in life, maintain a good attitude to ease fear and weary mood. Last but not the least, the community should pay attention to attempted suicide patients and strengthen them health education and mental health assessment; meanwhile, enhancing them capacity to cope with problems by giving adequate social support in order to assist them out of dilemma and integrate into the community.
