Jing Yi Shu Wen is a masterpiece written by Wang Niansun and his son Wang Yinzhi, which consists of32volumes, and is based on Wang’s phonology theory, designed to explain a large number of phonetic loan characters incorrectly annotated by ancient people in the classical literatures. However, this work can tell us how do Wang control the standard of phonological commentaries, and is also helpful for us to connect cognate words. And there are a lot of achievements in Wang’s phonological commentaries materials, regarded as the phenomena of phonetic loan characters, and not distinguished from cognate words by the method of terms, which reveals the shortcoming of Wang, that is, the fact that Wang can not tell characters and words. The data indicates that the average value of the phonetic differences of the1099phonological commentaries materials is1.33, which is kept on a low level and shows us the fact that Wang control the phonetic difference in phonological commentaries strictly in total. Among that, there are situations that the phonetic difference is bigger, which challenges the principle of phonetic similarity. But those phonomena can not wipe out the guidance function of phonetic similarity principle. In our experiments, the rules concluded from Wang’s phonological commentaries are very helpful for us to expand the informed achievements successfully. And the systemic method of connecting and confirming cognate words we are advocating just originates from the idea of Wang and his outstanding companions. The abuandance of demonstration from all kinds of aspects provides us with more phonetic and semantic evidences. Although there are some shortages in Wang’s phonology theory, and the item type way of annotation is not good to the systemic study of connecting cognate words, the progressive and effective aspects of Wang’s phonological commentaries is the most important.
