Chu Hsi’s Research On Mencius’Thoughts

Chu Hsi’s Research on Mencius’ thoughts was a study standing in Chu Hsi’s position. So we should go back to the era of Chu Hsi’s, and seek for the social background of his living. By pursuing the condition of the Song Dynasty, keeping the trace of the development and evolution of mencius’thought and people’s attitude on mencius, we will then establish the research object of Chu Hsi’s Research on Mencius’thoughts. However, in the contemporary society, hermeneutics has become a kind of dominant way of thinking. When we face some explaining phenomenon, to think and criticize with hermeneutics, it also is significant. With this measure will we be aware of the significance of our job. But the most important part of the research is the analysis of thought. To contrast the text meaning difference between Chu Hsi and Mencius, to look at the explanations to theory of goodness, the relationship of heart and nature and pursuit of slack soul from Chu Hsi, it will show much rich connotation. The interpretation of the theory of goodness will lead to the proposition that nature is moral, and Chu Hsi asserted to supplement the scarcity of the theory of goodness. The interpretation to the relation between heart and nature made clear the function of heart, nature and passion, and tried to establish nature the subject status of the center. Meanwhile, the explanation of the pursuit of slack soul from Zhu Zi made it clear that the pursuit had different meanings, and make it become an expression of respect. Finally, we will return to the contemporary context, this paper discusses the adaptability between the Chu Hsi’s Research on Mencius’ thoughts and contemporary society, even its value.
