| NBA, short for National Basketball Association in USA, has a long history andextensive influence. NBA culture is just like a miniature of American culture, so theNBA language has some unique features. As a great part of NBA language transmission,NBA news reports attract millions of readers and basketball fans every day. However, insuch a fast-paced society now, because of time limitation, the readers usually scan theheadlines first, and then pick their interested content to read the details. This kind ofobjective and quick reading makes news headlines more and more important.Memetics is a new theory based on Darwinian Evolution to explain the discipline ofcultural evolution. Meme, the gene of culture evolution, exists from replication andtransmission. Language is one of the carriers. Based on Memetics, the thesis analyzesthe features of the language in NBA news headlines, classifies the NBA news headlinesand discusses the translation and meme transmission of NBA news headlines fromconstruction and linguistic perspective. A big number of NBA news headlines arecollected and analyzed. According to the classification of memes from Professor HeZiran (2005), the thesis classifies NBA headlines into memetic genotype and memeticphenotype. And the memetic genotype is sub-classified into direct transmission of thesame information and indirect transmission of the same information. The memeticphenotype is sub-classified into homophony, same forms with different imagination,same structure with different meanings. And then, the lexical, syntactical and rhetoricalfeatures contained in the NBA news headlines are analyzed. At last, according to thelanguage features and classification of NBA news headline, the thesis firstly exploresthe type transfer of the meme from the construction perspective, and secondly analyzesthe meme transmission of language and culture from the linguistic perspective. Thedetailed examples are analyzed as backup.The thesis analyzes NBA news headlines from memetic theory. The author tries tobroaden the application of Memetics, enrich the creation of news headlines language,translate the English NBA news headlines, improve reader’s understanding of NBAnews headlines and promote transmission of NBA culture. It is expected to make someenlightenment of the translation of NBA headlines, build a bridge between Chinese andAmerican basketball culture and promote the communication and blending of worldbasketball culture. |
