Delexicalized verbs are verbs that have lost their semantic content to somedegree. With their high frequency and strong word-building capacity,they play animportant role in English language. In Chinese-English conference interpreting, theuse of delexicalized verbs has some distinctive features.Based on the Chinese-English Conference Interpreting Corpus (CECIC3.0), thepaper investigates the use of delexicalized verb make in Chinese-English pressconference interpretating. The result shows that the occurrence and frequency ofdelexicalized verb make in interpreted English texts of Chinese press conferencesare significantly higher than those in original English press conference texts. Thecollocational types of delexicalized verb make in the interpreted English texts ofChinese press conference are significantly more diversified than those of translatedEnglish texts of Chinese government work report. By doing quantitative andqualitative analyses, this thesis finds that the frequent use and the diversifiedcollocational types of delexicalized verb make in Chinese-English conferenceinterpreting result from the impact of the source text, the characteristics ofinterpreting, as well as the constraint of expectancy norm.
