The thesis studies six sets of Chinese perusal textbooks on how to deal with thesynonym, mainly adopts the qualitative description analysis method to diachronicanalyze the fifties, eighties and new century textbooks and synchronic analyze foursets of new century textbooks from three aspects:synonym discrimination method, example, exercise setting. In aspect of diachronic, the awareness of dealing with synonyms graduallystrengthened from the fifties to the eighties to the new century textbooks, mainly in thesynonym gradual increases, style sets gradually into the systemic;analysis perspectiveshifts from emphasis on the synonym grammatical discrimination to the meaning andusage descrimination, expecially focusing on collocations and pragmatic. In aspect of synchronic, the four sets of new century textbooks are consciously todiscriminate the synonyms, however, the degree of the treatment is varied.Somediscrimination betweem synonyms is very systematic and there is a fixed analysisframework, at the same time, the ways of discrimination are diverse. Somediscrimination is too brief to find out the distinctive features of the synonym and thetreatment of discmimination is rough. We observe the examples from these aspects: norm, typical, simple and practical, context richness and completeness. The examples of some high-level textbooks arevery rich, however, the primary and intermediate examples are fewer; some examplesare not unified, the synonyms have no compared sentences. Additionally, someexamples are not standardized and the contrast is not obvious, so there is still room forimprovement. In aspect of exercise, the four sets of textbooks have recognized the importanceof exercise to master the synonym, so they consciously set exercise session after the lessons, but there are still some problems:the type of the exercise is relatively simple;the amount of exercise is not sufficient; discrimination and exercise are out of touch. The article offers several suggestions on dealing with the synonym, including:increasing the overall awareness of the importance of teaching the synonym, settingdiscrimination sessions into the textbook and teaching it as one part of the lexis.Inaddition to the semantic, usage, style these large items, the txetbook has to researchsmaller dscrimination items to form a framework,at the same time, the discriminationshould pay attention to the key points and don’t be exhaustive. The examples shouldbe standard, typical and have clear contrast,in addition, the examples should providecomplete contextual information and moderate the difficulty. We should design moretypes to enrich the form of the exercise, while increasing the amount of exercise anddscrimination and exercie should be combined.
