The Literary Scenes Of Xu Xu’s Urban Romance In The1930s-1940s

Xu Xu is an important writer in the history of modern Chinese literary. In20th century,he wrote a series of urban romance, like the Ghost in love, and the wind desolate, which had aunique style. Romance of these fiction took Shanghai exotic urban lives as the background,creating a mysterious and weird world of urban romance. Based on this, his urban romancealluded to reality with careful thinking in them and usually explored philosophical questions.His works are well-conceived and elegant, romantic and are warmly welcomed by readers,having high research value.The object of this study are the Xu Xu’s urban romance in the1930s and1940s. In thisdissertation, first introduced the traditional concept of Chinese romance, and carded thesequence of the romance from ancient times to now, and determined the concept and scope ofthe urban romance of Xu Xu’s fiction. Then taken Xu Xu’s representative works as anexample, focusing on the analysis of characteristics of the urban romance of Xu Xu’s novels;then, further illustrated his caring for reality which hidden behind his urban romance. In theend, analyzed the uniqueness of his urban romance by placing them in the backgroud of the1930s and1940s. Then came to the conclusion that the urban romance of Xu Xu’s fiction werebetween legend and reality, having both the popularity and elite which enriched the literaryscenes of the1930s and1940s.This dissertation is divided into three main parts: Introduction; First,“Romance:traditional romance and urban romance”;“Second, The urban romance of Xu Xu”;“Third,The parts in Xu Xu’s romance novels that alluding to reality”;“Fouth, Xu Xu in the scenes ofthe urban romance in the1930s and1940s”; Conclusion. The Introduction part explained thegeneral situation of Xu Xu’s novels in the1930s and1940s and the purpose of the writing ofthis paper. Chapter one explored the tradition of ancient Chinese romance and the basicfeature called “real and surreal”, and then determined the concept and scope of modern urbanromance. Chapter two analyzed the romance side in Xu Xu’s novels considering choice of themain body, imagery in the urban romance, the atmosphere in urban romance, to analyze urbanromance of Xu Xu’s novels in details. Chapter three, first introduced the time and spacewhich were city-revolution, city-war. Then analyzed the reality part and the roving moodbetween urban and rural area hidden in his novels. This is innovation and focus in the wholetext. Chapter four compare the urban romance of Xu Xu with other related writers in the1930s and1940s. Then summarized their unique characteristics. The Conclusion part summedup the status and value of Xu Xu’s urban romance in the history of modern Chinese literary.
