Along with the rapid progress made in science and technology, English for science andtechnology (hereinafter referred to as EST) is widely used among people. Nominalization isregarded as one of the main features of EST. Due to its characteristics of objectiveness,conciseness, formality and technicality, it can usually be usually found in EST. In this way,the understanding of Nominalization has a significant effect on the quality of ESTtranslation. This thesis aims at doing a study on the Norminzation’s effect on the quality ofEST translation.Under the guidance of the Skopos’ theory, the author discusses the Translation ofNominalization in EST. Skopos theory believes that a translational action is determined bythe purpose. In this way, the Skopos provides a new perspective for translation ofNominalization in EST.The thesis includes the following five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction partwhich includes the significance, purpose and the structure of this thesis. Chapter two is thereview of Nominalization in EST, which mainly concentrates on its definition, features,the previous studies in this aspect. Chapter three is the theoretical frame of the SkoposTheory. The author firstly introduced the origin and development of Skopos Theory, andthen listed the three main rules of Skopos theory: the Skopos rule, the coherence rule andthe fidelity rule. Chapter four is the main body of the thesis. The author first pointed out theprinciples of the Translation of Nominalization in EST. The translator should attach moreemphasis on translator’s creativity and cultural obstruction so as to realize the adequacy andaccuracy of the translation. The author applied the Skopos Theory in the Translation ofNominalization in EST translation and concluded the translation strategies includingliterality, conversion, addition, omission and rewriting. Chapter five is the conclusion,including the findings and the suggestions for the further studies.In this thesis, the application of the Skopos Theory provides a new direction for the Translation of Nominalization in EST and gives some enlightenment on the further studies.
