Eco-translatological Study Of Li Wenjun’s Translation Of The Sound And The Fury

The Sound and the Fury written by William Faulkner is widely acknowledged asone of the most representative stream-of-consciousness novels, on which enormous andextensive study has been conducted. In1982, Li Wenjun first translated it into ChineseXuan Hua Yu Sao Dong. It became an instant and far-reaching success, with somecontemporary Chinese writers like Mo Yan and Wang Meng even confessed itsexemplary role for their own writing. However, study on the translation still falls short.Therefore, the present author shall examine representation of the source text and identifyreasons for certain translational deviations, while probing into the interaction between thetranslational environment and translation.The thesis is composed of three chapters with Eco-translatology as its theoreticalframework. Different from Eco-criticism, Eco-translatology is more akin to an analoguebetween ecological mechanism and translation activities, especially the idea of holisticharmony and adaptation and selection. Unfledged and young as Eco-translatology is,it possesses strong explanatory power for the balanced beauty of translation and providesa more comprehensive idea than context does. Hence Chapter Two and Three aredevoted to analyze from an eco-translatological point of view the translational deviationsin Li Wenjun s translation, like adjustment to the form, substitution of culture-loadedvocabulary, interpretation in the foreword and so on. Chapter Two concentrates on thesource text s translational eco-environment and Chapter Three on the target text stranslational eco-environment.
