The paper aims to compare the two female images Carrie and Guo Haizao who struggledin commercialized societies: the beginning of the20thcentury America and the beginning ofthe21stcentury China. Both of them lead a life in a social background with similar degreeof commercialization and industrialization. Facing the intense conflict between dream andreality, they choose the same way to make true of the dream, which directs to the miserablefate at last. The paper, based on the theory of Darwinism and Social Darwinism, tries toanalysis their ups and downs in their lives and probe the comprehensive reasons for these.The paper consists of five parts. The first chapter introduces Theodore Dreiser and Liuiu,and the latest findings from their works at home and abroad. The thesis statement is thenpresented. The second chapter introduces the theoretical foundation of the paper, on the basisof which the two characters’ downfall of their life will be probed. The third chapter tries togive an analysis of their unfit images from the aspect of nature and society. On the way tomake the dream come true, they’re struggling to get rid of the unfit image which comes bothfrom their natural self and the social environment, and it is this kind of struggle that leads tothe tragic end of the life. The fourth chapter states their success and failure of the fittest. Theway they choose to become successful in the metropolitan is always filled with degenerationand immorality, and is doomed to the miserable fate. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of thepaper, in which the findings are stated and the teachings of both characters presented, thesignificance of the paper put forward.
