| In recent years, interpreting has established its increasingly important status ininternational cultural and educational exchanges and cooperation. Interpreters’ intelligencehas now become an indispensable part in international activities ranging from top-notchacademic seminars to commonly seen lectures. Take the educational foreign aid programsorganized by Northeast Normal University (NENU) in2011as an example, the writer’srole as an interpreter has been recognized as a bridging mediator in helping the lecturer andthe listeners overcome language barriers in intercultural communication.In transcribing process, however, the writer has found that the storage of technicalterms, sentence patterns as well as encyclopedic knowledge is far from enough. Meanwhile,the writer has realized that the foundation of non-linguistic competence should beimproved on the basis of consolidating the base of linguistic competence for theimprovement of interpreting quality. The transcript of the recorded interpretation the writerdid in South China Normal University serves as a carrier on which a reflective research isconducted by means of quantitative analysis of the data collected from the transcription inhopes of finding out solutions to the improvement of interpreting quality and meanwhilethrowing some light on the students to take part in the future educational foreign aidprograms.This report is presented in five parts covering a brief introduction to the program, thecontent of the lecture and the basic framework of the transcript in the first part; the analysisfrom the perspective of syntactic, stylistic features and sentence groups in the second; theassessment of interpreting quality on accuracy and fluency in the third; then thecountermeasures to be taken for better improvement; and the conclusion in the last part. |
