The Cinema Study Of Zhang Shichuan

Zhang Shichuan, the first short feature film director in China, led his career across the whole early period of Chinese film history. As the boss of the most influential Mingxing Film Company in early Chinese film, he directed and produced more than one hundred films with various genres under different backgrounds.The thesis divided Zhang Shichuan’s career into four phases by time, made the beginning and ending of the Mingxing Film Company as the watershed of his career. By getting into the early texts of video and related writings from artistic and managerial ways, I tried to analyze the historical and artistic meanings of the films directed and produced by him. Meanwhile, I tried to examine the effects of related events of his different phases, to discuss the internal and external causes of his entering of film business, to interpret the meanings of his works and productions respectively. By discovering the generative mechanism of these works and events, I tried to remodeling Zhang’s double identity as a director and a producer, to interpret the meanings of his directing and producing.
