| Yao Nai(1731-1815), who lived in the period of Qian-Long and Jia-Qing of Qing dynasty, was a litterateur of Tongcheng Literature school, as well as an accomplished calligrapher. He was also a representative calligrapher of Post Learning School in the middle period of the Qing dynasty, which was significant for the exploration of calligraphy history. However, in the view of Calligraphy History in the middle period of the Qing dynasty, Yao Nai was considered as a literati calligrapher who had’high status in literary and low status in calligraphy’. It deemed that the researchers will have a preconceived point of view if they simply treat Yao Nai as a’literati calligrapher’, thus miss the specific investigation of the calligraphy. It will not only cause unfair evaluation of Yao Nai’s calligraphy concepts, practice and even Calligraphic History, but also inevitably lose a broad view of it.The article mainly includes the following aspects of the study which focus on collecting literature and images of works, hoping to contribute to the further study and refinement of calligraphy history in the Qing dynasty:(a) Consulting with biography, we totally studied out their living and friends-making of Yao Nai and Wang Wenzhi(l730-1802).(b) Try to complete the gathering of Yao Nai’s calligraphic works handed down, do the quantitative statistics from the first-hand information, then to complete the basis of research that a calligrapher case study must contain, and put the investigation and evaluation of their calligraphy achievements into a large number of plates.(c) Using plates to demonstrate the history from the perspective of Yao Nai’s calligraphy works, in order to reveal its reflection and exploration of an era calligraphy style, as well as its unique understanding and deliberate pursuit of calligraphy which was based on the background in the middle of the Qing dynasty. In this article, Yao Nai’s unique character of art formed in the contention between Han and Song and his literary practice, which was a pursuit of art and artistic style, chose by Yao Nai during his own life experience. All these above might help to change consistent understanding of Yao Nai’s calligraphy. In addition, this article hope that the three Appendixes in the end of the article-’Historical Calligraphy Data in Yao Nai’s Anthology’.’Personals Chronology of Yao Nai and Wang Wenzhi’,’Catalogue of Yao Nai s Calligraphy Works’, which were pre-order results of this research project, can provide a relatively concentrated literature materials for latecomer to research relevant subjects in depth. |
