A Cognitive Research On The "A Erbu B" Construction

A erbu B construction is a common structure in modern Chinese. Recent years,it arouses more and more scholars’ interest, but most of them study the syntactic andsemantic features of A erbu B construction and few scholars tried to explain thecognitive mechanism of A erbu B construction. Some scholars discussed the certainaspects of the meaning formation process, but they have not formed a complete andunified system. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct more thorough research to theformation mechanism of A erbu B construction. In order to perfect the previousstudies of A erbu B construction, a CIB cognitive model, which is constructed by theConstruction Coercion Theory, Image Schema and Conceptual Blending Theory, isproduced. At the same time,610items of A erbu B expressions from the intenet,CNKI, People’s Daily and dictionary are collected to build a corpus for a quantitativeand qualitative study via CIB model.This paper consists of5parts:The first chapter is the brief introduction, including motivation, purpose andscope of research, methods applied, data collection and the overall layout of theresearch.The second chapter reviews the previous studies of A erbu B construction fromthe perspective of traditional philology, pragmatics and cognitive linguistics andpoints out the inadequacy of these studies.The third chapter constructs the theoretical framework of the study. First of all,it introduces the Construction Coercion Theory, Image Scema Theory andConceptual Blending Theory and lists their respective advantages anddisadvantages.Then it explores the feasibility of integration among them. Finally, itbuilts the CIB model.The fourth chapter is the application of the CIB model. First, it gives adetailed classification of different kinds of A erbu B expressions. Second, the cognitive mechanism of A erbu B expressions is analyzed and discussed fromwhether AB/BA in A erbu B construction is compound word or not with CIB toillustrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the new model.The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this study. At the same time, it lists somecontributions and suggestions for further research.
