A Study Of �Qie X Qie Y� Construction Based On BC Model

Buzzword is the most vivid language which is widely used in our life and which is an unavoidable part in linguistic research. At present, few researchers have made an analysis of the construction �qie x qie y� and its variants, such as �qie pang qie zhen xi�, �qie xing qie jiang jie�, �qie man qie zhu yi� and so on. However, the studies on buzzwords mainly concern the reasons why some expressions become popular, and focus on their semantic and pragmatic features. Not only the articles on the generation mechanism are seldom seen, but also the research from the angle of Construction Grammar. This thesis tries to analyze the �qie x qie y� Construction under the framework of Construction Grammar. A theoretical framework BC(Blending & Coercion) Model has been established from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and construction grammar in order to make a deep analysis on the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic features of the �qie x qie y� Construction. Besides that, the cognitive mechanism and the pattern of semantic change are to be expounded with 290 examples exhaustively collected from Baidu advanced search engine and Micro Blog(sina & tencent), and the thesis divided the corpus into 8 types and 290 tokens.This thesis includes five parts, the main contents are as follows.Chapter One Introduction: it will introduce the motivation, research aim, methodology, data collection and the layout of the thesis.Chapter Two Literature Review: it will review the relevant studies on the construction �qie x qie y� and find out the gap in the previous researches.Chapter Three Theoretical Framework: hoping to fill the gap of the previous studies, a new theoretical framework will be established. Coercion theory and blending theory will be modified as Blending Coercion(Syntactic, Semantic, and Pragmatic). A case study will be made as an application of the BC model.Chapter Four Data Statistics, Analysis and Discussion: According to the parts of speech of x and y and from the perspective of syntax, the corpus-based data can be divided into eight classes.The semantic is parallel and incremental, everyone would exert the action x, but the semantics focus on y, and y is the key point with a prominent status. qie x qie y means when you do x, and don't forget to do y, reflecting the speaker's anticipation, advice, vigilance to others or the self-deprecating, description of himself;The pragmatic features of qie x qie y construction are subjectivity, novelty, simplicity and productivity, which is aimed to reveal its cognitive mechanism and the regular pattern of semantic change.Chapter Five Conclusion: this part deals with the main findings and contributions of the whole thesis.1. By enriching the coercion theory and extending the blending theory, the thesis is the first to establish BC model which is used as research framework to expound the cognitive mechanism of qie x qie y.2. Making an analysis of the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic features of qie x qie y construction with relative data to support.Finally, pointing out some other deficiencies and putting forward some suggestions to the relative research.
