The prosperity of world economy has boosted the cultural exchanges across theworld and meanwhile it also facilitates the spreading of consecutive interpreting as aprofessional interpreting activity. Especially recent years, in order to overcome thedifficulties and promote the quality in consecutive interpreting, more and morescholars are dedicated to the study on extra-linguistic information. Extra-linguisticinformation is the information out of language. Its comprehension is quite difficultwhich requires an overall consideration of non-literal information elements such ascontext, background knowledge, etc. However, it plays a significant role in graspingthe information of original speech comprehensively and accurately and in promotingthe quality of consecutive interpreting. The Effort Model, raised by Daniel Gile, is originally devised for simultaneousinterpreting, and has later been developed into another similar model for consecutiveinterpreting. The study object of the Effort Model is the energy consumed duringconsecutive interpreting. And the whole consecutive interpreting process has beendivided into two phases of listening and note-taking as well as speech production inorder to seek an effective way of allocating energy and promoting interpreting quality. With Effort Model raised by Professor Daniel Gile as theoretical basis andthrough studying the interpreters’ performances in press conference, the present studyaims at tackling extra-linguistic information in consecutive interpreting from anempirical perspective. The author makes an empirical analysis of the ELI interpretations in these conferences. Through analysis, the author will discover therelation of extra-linguistic information with the Effort Model and propose copingstrategies on the basis of Gile’s Effort Model to improve the interpreting ofextra-linguistic information and promote improve the quality of consecutiveinterpreting. The author hopes that this thesis will contribute to the study ofextra-linguistic information in CI and provide reference for interpreters as well asinterpretation lovers to improve the accuracy of CI.
