The Study Of Place Names Of Fuyang Shi On The Language And Culture

Fuyang Shi is in the northwest of Anhui Province, and it has a large population, located in the south of Huanghuaihai Plain. Fuyang Shi has three districts,four counties, and one county-level city. For some reason, the study of place names of Fuyang Shi is very deficient. Therefore, this paper will fill the blank area of place names’ analyses on the language and culture, and find out the regular patterns and cultural backgrounds. All of this may provide some useful proposals for the civil servants who are taking charge of place-name management.Fuyang Shi administrative division above the village is a total of2097place names. This paper is mainly about2097place names, from language and culture angle, the analysis is about these names’ phonetic features,structure characteristics, naming types, cultural connotation and so on. This paper also give a brief summary on the diachronic evolution and public services of place-name. This paper is divided into six chapters:The first chapter is the introduction part. The geographical, historical and administrative backgrounds of this city is briefly introduced. After giving some definitions of place-name, the current situation of place names’ analyses of Fuyang Shi will be introduced. This part also expounds the significance of the paper and the methods used in the following chapters.The second chapter analyzes the linguistic features of place names in Fuyang. Syllable constitution and different tonal pattern will be listed in this part,the phonetic features will be seen-from the data and the explanation. By using linguistic and toponymy methods, this part analyzes the general names used in the whole place names, word-building ways and the grammatical structure of these words(phases). At the end of this part, it also briefly analyzes three rhetoric devices involved in these names, such as metaphor, metonymy.The third chapter summarize some main naming types of place names in Fuyang, social factors have deeply affected the naming types. Then this part reveals the four diachronic evolutions of place names:the quantity is becoming much bigger, the contents are more abundant, the structure is more reasonable, the words are more tasteful.The fourth chapter reveals rich cultural connotations of the place names of Fuyang. Ancestral ideas, religious culture, totemism and some other "cultural messages" have been reflected by numerous place names. Regional characteristics and social characteristics have been inherited properly.The current achievements and the problems existing in the management of place names in Fuyang will be simply listed in the fifth chapter, and this part also puts forward some proposals as reference.The last chapter is a summary for the whole paper.
