College students’ emotional self-control ability plays a very important role inboth the students’ learning life and the adaptation to future work and social. The aimof this study is to discuss this aspect, based on the induction of previous studies, tosummarize the theoretical concepts and operational definition of emotionalself-control and provide theoretical support for making the college students’ emotionalself-control questionnaire. Starting from the definition of college students’ emotionalself-control ability, combining the initial questionnaire containing40items with theinterview results, the author works out the formal questionnaire which contains14items. The formal questionnaire includes four parts, which respectively are perceptionand experience self-emotion, self-evaluation of self-emotion, self-emotion control andself-emotion expression. The five-score method is used in this questionnaire. The fiveare completely not conforming to, not very conforming to, conforming to or not, veryconforming to, fully conforming to. After the test of factor analysis, reliability andvalidity, the questionnaire shows good reliability and validity, the theory of structureand data fitting is good, so the questionnaire is an ideal tool to measure collegestudents’ emotional self-control ability. The author uses this questionnaire to know thecollege students’ emotional self-control and demographic variables and investigate thecollege students’ emotional self-control relationship with coping styles.Results show that the awareness of college students’ experience, their emotionalcapacity and the ability to assess their mood is significantly different on gender, girlsgreater than boys; emotional self-control abilities of students from different majorsare significantly different, that is,on the aspect of perception and experience ofself-emotion, arts students are better than science students; on the ability ofself-evaluation of self-emotion, arts students better than science students; on theability self-emotion control, students of engineering are better than those of science.The relationship between college students’ abilities of emotional self-control andcoping styles is: college students’ emotional self-control has a significant positivecorrelation with positive coping styles and a significant negative correlation withnegative coping styles. Through regression analysis, it is found that college students’emotional self-control ability can predict the positive coping styles and negativecoping styles by34.3%and10.5%respectively both of which can be chosen byindividuals under the stress situation.
