| Nowadays, the Internet is developing in an amazing speed, followed byexploding number of netizens. The language netizens used is called “net lingoâ€, whichis not only a Internet language phenomenon, but which has entered and reflected ourdaily life. As the world is paying increasingly more attention to China, Chinese has abigger influence on the international English, even more than English-speakingcountries, announced by American Global Language Supervision Institute. Therefore,it is indispensable to translate Chinese net lingo into English. The word “meme†wasfirst proposed by Richard Dawkins. Memetics has been applied in many fields ofsocial researches, and it is also one of the three main linguistics theories. Languageand meme are closely interrelated. For the reasons above, it is applicable to adoptmemetics as a means to discuss Chinese popular net lingo translation.In this article, the author aims to further understand net lingo from2010to2013by analyzing them with meme theory, and then tries to do some translation ofthe Chinese net lingo in a memetic guidance. First, the author reviews the researcheson memetics and net lingo both abroad and at home; secondly, the author analyze thecharacteristics and classify them by their contents and forms. After putting up many examples, the author summarizes that most of the popular net lingoes result frommeme. This thesis attach great importance on the study on the meme formation andtransmission methods, and genotype meme and phenotype meme are the essentialmemes. And then, the author gives three translation principles and takes the memecharacteristics into consideration to create strong translated memes under the sometranslation strategies, aiming to do a better translation of Chinese popular net lingo.This thesis introduce meme theory to the study of Chinese popular net lingo todo a careful analysis and to come up with some Chinese-English translation strategies,n the hope of being helpful for the future net lingo translators and language learners. |
