On The Translation Of Manchester:a History(Chaptersl-3):from The Perspective Of Register

On the basis of the translation of Manchester:A History (Chapters1-3), a book by Alan Kidd, this paper attempts to discuss the problems in the translation process, including coherence and cohesion at textual level; the translation of passive sentences, attributive clauses and separated structures at syntactic level; and the translation of nouns and adverbs at lexical level from the perspective of register.Halliday, the representative of functional grammar, divides register into field of discourse, mode of discourse and tenor of discourse. If any of the three variables changes, register will alter accordingly. The vocabulary in this historical text has wide register. Besides formal words, there are also some colloquial words and professional words. Under the guidance of register, some tentative solutions are applied in the translation. For translation at lexical level, the translator, first of all, considers the stylistic features of historical text and then chooses the most appropriate meaning according to the linguistic context, and socio-cultural context. For translation at syntactic and textual levels, corresponding translation strategies are also proposed.
