Wushe, as the most important society of Ci in the late years of the Republic of China, attracts a large group of artistic celebrities. Studying the aspects of the activity, creation and values of Wushe helps us learn the situation of development of Ci in these years. Based on the review of the documents, the thesis statement restores the historic highlights of Wushe.The Introduction gives a comprehensive review of the study of Ci in the late years of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. Furthermore, the general overview of Wushe and the specific conditions of the members of Wushe are mentioned.Chapter One reviews the whole process of birth and end of Wushe. The society started in the isolated Shanghai foreign settlement in the period of Anti-Japanese War. The society was also a cultural activity of association for the interest of the artistic taste. During the almost thirty-year existence of the society, the members had a deep affection among the group through the choice of the tones for Ci and many other means. Wushe finally fell apart due to the spread of the war, the departure of the members from Shanghai and the increasing conflicts of the members.Based on the study of the works of Wushe, Chapter Two pays emphasis on the time of the publication of the Cis of Wushe. The works are embodied with the rich emotions, such as the sigh of the prosperity and fall of China, the memory of the old friends, the sadness of the spring and the pleasure of banquets. The works of the society bears the style of continuousness and restraints, some of which bears the characteristics of the ups and downs.Chapter Three focuses on the criticism towards the discipline of Ci among the members of Wushe. Section One gives a brief description of the heated debate of the four tones among the members such as Mao Heting, Xia Chengtao, Wu Meisun. Though different attitudes they hold in the nature of the four tones, they attack seriously the phenomenon of the stick to the four tones in Ci. Section Two presents the different voices among the scholars about the death of Jiang Kui and whether Baishi and Shizhou are the same one. The heated discussion of society of Ci provides the valuable ideas for the later development of Ci.Based on the studies, the remaining sections summarize the meaning and influence of Wushe. The society provides the platform of communication for the members; from the perspective of the discipline of Ci, Wushe has a positive contribution to the malady of styles of the Mengchuang Ci.
