Suzhou River, across the entire area of Shanghai, is colsed to dowith Shanghais development and peoples daily lives. Suzhou River usedto be smooth circulated and had a wide depth, but after the changingof the natural and human, it gradually silted and became narrow andshallow, finally evolved into a tributary of the Huangpu River. After theopening of Modern Shanghai, the entire city is in the trend ofurbanization and modernization in a large-scale.Under the combinedeffect of the external and internal forces, Suzhou River began a newchapter of history, with a large number of industry and populationgathering here. However, when the Suzhou River made outstandingcontributions to Shanghais economic development, it was beginning toget polluted. On the basis of the data compilation, the thesis analysesand discusses the process, the cause as well as the impact of thepollution of the Suzhou River and how the Shanghai social forces dealtwith the Suzhou River pollution in modern history. With the time went by, the deterioration of Suzhou Riverpollution had become worse. Suzhou River had experienced theevolution of seasonal black-odor to year-round black-odor as well asfrom local pollution to all pollution of the Shanghai territory. The reasonsfor the Suzhou River pollution are extremely complex, and the thesisanalyzes the causes of the pollution from the six aspects: industrialpollution, the stack of warehouse terminals and shipping pollution, bridge construction pollution, population growth pollution, wastedisposal pollution, and the own factors of Suzhou River itself. SuzhouRiver pollution has a major impact on Shanghai society which affectsthe lives of the people and environmental health on both sides of theSuzhou River, and also affects the appearance and the water supply of Shanghai. In the face of the pollution of the Suzhou River, many socialforces began to take certain control measures before and after thefounding the peoples republic of china, such as dredging, constructionof sewage treatment plant and the planning of Suzhou River sewagetreatment works, etc. But these governance activities didn’t preventthe Suzhou River pollution from the deteriorated situation. At themeantime governance activities, which were often limited to capital, technology, social environment, constantly interrupted by many otherfactors. The black and stink face of the Suzhou River, was not slowlychange until the Suzhou River three comprehensive was started byShanghai Municipal Government in the1990s.
