For non-Chinese character cultural sphere learners, character memorization presents many difficulties. These learners have no background in Chinese characters, their native languages use a phonetic alphabet. Therefore, due to differences in the ability to learn Chinese characters based to their non-Chinese background, many students become frustrated with the process of memorizing Chinese. The ability to teach, study, and remember Chinese characters has become worthy of further study by foreign language teachers.This paper investigates and analyzes non-Chinese character cultural sphere learners and memorization strategies of the primary Chinese characters. This paper is segmented into the following:(1) a brief introduction to the major international study of memorization strategies of Chinese characters; (2)further analysis of memorization strategies of learners of Chinese characters through research on the non-Chinese cultural circle primary stage students’character memorization strategies; (3) comparative analysis of the use and efficiency of Chinese character memorization strategies, finding that memorization strategies and the effect on Chinese characters recognition and writing is indeed associated; (4) an examination of three experiments, conducted under laboratory conditions, on the effects of teaching strategies on students’memorization, verifying that the context, comparison of the shape of characters, and the emphasis of radicals can deepen the students’memorization of Chinese character; (5) a conclusion with recommendations on the teaching of Chinese characters. The author hopes that under the positive guidance of teachers, the learners can actively apply effective memorization strategies and improve the speed and quality of Chinese character learning.Through analysis of classroom observations and multiple experiments, more effective strategies that improve recall of Chinese characters include the following:(1) analysis of the various components of Chinese characters; (2) in-depth analysis of confusing characters; (3) the use of other tools to improve memory recall; (4) the use of fun memorization strategies; i.e. usage of games. This paper argues that the use of memorization strategies not only helps learners of the Chinese language remember characters, but also stimulates pro-active behavior from the learner. Overall, these techniques improve the learners’ level of Chinese tremendously. It is essential for Chinese learners to use memorization strategies in the early stages of learning Chinese because these methods are valuable and have a significant influence on the composition of textbooks and the teaching practice of Chinese character.
