The essay aims to explore the modern Chinese Gongbi figure painting through analysis of painting materials and techniques by three aspects, which are Inheritance, Fusion and Expansion. It reviews the development of traditional Gongbi figure painting and the situation of modern Chinese Gongbi figure painting. It also investigates the development mode of Chinese Gongbi figure painting’s materials and techniques. With my experience from the study of Chinese painting materials and techniques, it uses my graduation work as a case study to analyze the application of Chinese painting materials and techniques and the method to inherit the traditional Chinese figure painting.Through the study of observation and analysis of materials and tests by using individual material and synthetic materials in the postgraduate courses, especially making pigment own self and the practices of counterdrawing the Chinese ancient paintings from the very basic layer, I grasp the essentials of application materials and gather various experiences for independent creation.Using the creation of modern Gongbi figure painting as a start point, it sums up the three years academic study through discussing my future direction in the area of the figure paintings and sorting out my unique application method of techniques. Base on this, it shows my personal material language and expression method, which makes the painting materials and techniques of modern Chinese Gongbi figure paintings inherited, fused and expanded.
