Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language is proposed after mid-1990s. Previously, it was attached to TCFL(Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language). As for foreign students, Chinese characters are regarded as a big bottleneck during their study. Therefore, Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language is also considered as a weak link in TCFL. To overcome this bottleneck, we need to study and research Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language. In resent years, how to improve the efficiency of studying Chinese characters by foreign students, has become a hotspot in the educational circles. Thus, its skills research becomes the main method of improving teaching efficiency. After setting the teaching object, teaching content and teaching goal, how to use teaching methods to better complete those goals, which requests teachers choose the proper teaching skills.This article summarizes the theories used in Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language. The author collects the domestic traditional teaching methods on Chinese characters and teaching skills which used in the course, then analyzes and estimates these teaching skills. The main body of this paper is divided into four parts:The first part:Summarizes the definition of Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language and its characteristics. Briefly introduces its history and the study situation. Analyzes the shortcomings of the study.The second part:Introduces the theories used in Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language.The third part:Collect teaching methods and skills of Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language systematically. Analyze merits and demerits and the applicable objects according to summarize those teaching methods and skills. Help teachers choose appropriate methods and skills in class.The fourth part:Discuss the relationship between teaching methods and skills of the domestic traditional Chinese characters teaching and Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language, then analyzes which of them can be used in the class.In teaching process, teachers should follow the principles of Chinese characters. On the base of Chinese characters’shape, sound and meaning, teachers ought to nimbly choose suitable skills in teaching process for different study period and student’s details. In order to help overseas students study Chinese characters much better and promote the development of Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language, teachers should also learn experience from domestic traditional Chinese characters teaching, and combine those useful methods and skills with Teaching Chinese Characters as a Foreign Language.
