Huaibei Dialect Phonetic Research

Located in the intersection of4provinces (the provinces of Su Lu Yuand Wan), Huai Bei is the inland of East China and Huai Hai economicregion. The city of Huai Bei has obtained a great development intransportation, economy, and the urban construction in recent years.With the development wave of the city, Huai Bei dialect also extendsitself to some degree but still retain some original state inessence.Regarded Huai Bei dialect as a spot of Zhong Yuan mandarinChinese and studied of the dialect on the aspects of phonetics, lexis,and syntax, especially at the angle of phonetics in synchrony anddiachrony, based on the research of Huai Bei dialect, this essay aims tosupplement a blank piece of domestic dialectology study. The fieldwork software TFW, Dialect Investigation Character Table (published bythe Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Language Institute,2007),Dialect Vocabulary Survey Book (mainly edited by Ding Shengshu,1989), and the Item List of Chinese Dialect Words,(published by thedialect research facility of ASSLI,2003) were applied in the studyprocess; meanwhile, according to the knowledge mastering of Chinese,the author preliminarily edited these entries, especially addednumerous colloquial words of Huai Bei dialect. In order to present HuaiBei dialect in a more accurate state, the chosen interviewers weredivided into three hierarchies by age groups—three generation of theyouth, middlescent and the elderly; Then a three-times recording wasgiven for each interviewers of the hierarchies by the author for the sakeof registering the phonetics and discriminating the Huai Bei dialect lexis.Based on these recording materials, the author proposes to summarizethe features of Huai Bei dialect on phonetics, lexis, and syntax, and thenexpound the especial linguistic phenomenon in this thesis.The wholethesis is composed five chapters. Chapter1is the introduction of Huai Bei area’s history, the research status of Huai Bei dialect, and theprocess of field investigation. Chapter2is a representation of thedialect’s syllable onsets, syllable rimes, and phonology collaborationsfrom the aspect synchrony. Chapter3applies a contrastive analysisbetween the phonetic system of Huai Bei dialect and mid–ancientphonetic system from the diachronic state, and then summarizes HuaiBei dialect’s characteristic of phonetic system. Chapter4is a briefdescription on the lexis and syntax of the dialect—following theprinciples of dialectology, we reserve commonly used terms, removeuncommon used dialect lexis, and then give the daily dialectexpressions exegesis and phonetic notations.The elementaryappearance of Huai Bei dialect can be comprehended through thedescription and analysis in this thesis.
