The famous German writer Hermann Hesse received the Nobel Prize in Literature in1946. His works are of great international influence and worldwide significance. They infected generations of readers because of their unique style and extensive tolerance. Hesse is a great writer with international spirit beyond the limit of nation, country and culture. Meanwhile, he seeks his ideals and redemption in Eastern, especially in Chinese culture. Chinese culture can be easily found in many of his works. It becomes a meditative prescription for the "illnesses of his time" to the writer himself and numerous readers. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction to this thesis. It includes the current research situation, the research methods, the research significance of this thesis and a brief introduction to Hesse and the background of his writings. The second chapter expounds several classic Chinese images and elements in Hesse’s works which had long-lasting international influence. In this part several famous works of Hesse such as Siddhartha, Narcissus and Goldmund, Steppenwolf, The Glass Bead Game will be used as objects to analyze their Chinese culture elements, their symbolic meaning and their characters. The third chapter analyzes the reasons for the appearance of so many popular and classic Chinese images and elements in Hesse’s works. This part analyzes the concrete factors of Chinese culture in Hesse’s works from the background of his time, society, family, the circumstance of their creation, his own factors and so on.The fourth chapter will be an expansion and a conclusion of the new features of Hesse’s works, who accepts and absorbs Chinese culture into the background of Western culture. And the last part is a conclusion of this thesis. This part will analyze the significance of Hesse’s work for his time, its massive function in communication and blend of eastern and western cultures and in its rescue of man’s inner world.Hesse is like a doctor for his times. He finds the ancient Chinese culture as a good recipe with carefulness and diligence. He creates a new prescription by integrating traditional and western medicine to heal the world through his own unique comprehension and working. His works make the reader feel rejuvenated again. They can calm down in this noisy world by reading his works. They can observe themselves and find something lost in their deepest heart.Chinese culture advocated by Hesse also plays a positive role of resurgence and recombination of self-conception in Europe where Sinology was very popular at that time. The world is changing. But the positive meaning in Hesse’s thoughts and his works never changes. In a world of various cultures we can solve most problems in politic, history, culture and other fields, if we have the "multicultural perspective" and the concept of wholeness of a world culture advocated by Hesse. Hesse’s works are worth attentive reading in any times. He is our permanent "citizen of world culture".
