| As a sculptor, I think we all work on sculptures based on our understanding of the sculptural history and question of what is sculpture indeed. Specific to me, my fundamental cognition of sculpture was initiated by the learning of material language. The cognitions, experiences and reflections that I gained from this process triggered my thinking of "what is sculpture", and thus, I started my own sculpture creation. Therefore, my thesis is focus on my learning experience of sculptural material language.To face the material directly is a crucial cognition when I had a better understood of sculpture after my study. The significance of facing the material directly is not only to be with the material in the same space that can be perceived immediately, but also demand us to explore the new possibility of nature with a personal newly existence state. And this possibility will be presented in terms of the concrete relation between the sculptor and material. Thus, personal sculptural language will be formed therefrom.This thesis is divided in two parts:in the first part, the author briefly introduced the development of sculptural material language. With the clue of Rodin and Brancusi, demonstrated material awareness and the "being-in-itself" nature of the material. The second part depicted my personal experiences and reflections from the process of learning material language. From choosing the material, and then facing the material until the interpretation the material, during this process, trying to establish the preliminary understanding of sculpture gradually and to realize the significance of your personal status when you faced material. |
