As the urbanization is an inevitable trend for social development, China has beenundergoing rapid urbanization process since the economic reform and opening-uppolicy was established. In recent years, with the needs of development of urbanconstruction and scale expansion, city enlargement and reconstruction turn to beimperative. However, the conflicts for demolitions become normal phenomena in landacquisition. The issues of how to protect the residents’ rights and reduce conflicts inthe renewal process in order to promote the old city renewal become a real “peopleproject” which has drawn widespread attention in these years, not only because it isclosely related to the life of residents, but also it is about the process of urbanizationand stability of social development. After making a general survey of existing research results, the discussions about theissues of urban demolition are mainly explaining from the structural perspective, andthe thesis uses documentary research method and interviewing method to collectmaterials after reviewing the related literature and policy, then, discusses the majorstrategies and the internal logic of the residents’ actions by analyzing residents’response in the demolition events in the framework of rational choice theory. Thepaper also discusses the various problems in urban demolition process from theperspective of residents. Furthermore, the thesis recollects the reconstructionmechanism of urban social space, making localization supplements on westernrational choice theory based on the theoretical scope of application, so as to analyzeand discuss it to some degree on practical and theoretical perspectives. The followed conclusions are obtained from the research, in the urban renewalprocess, the relocated have the strong feeling of unfairness and insecurity under thebackground of relative deprivation of residential area. And the personal actions haveobvious intention of interest demands, and their action strategies’ characteristics areperiodical and comprehensive. Furthermore, affected by a great deal of factors ofpolitics, economy and society, the residents’ actions have some logics which, on theone hand, have the rational characteristics, on the other hand, are also influenced bythe traditional social ethics. As the localization response to the western rational choicetheories, the research sums up the residents’ action logics as the rational choice of thetraditional ethics intervenes. Finally, by reflection to the reconstruction mechanism of urban social space, the research believes that social democratization and legalizationare imperative, and building up the model of powerful state-strong society is not onlyessential to resolve the variety of the contradictions at the present stage of old urbanrenewal process, but also the aim of the modern country.
