In the present thesis,though the experiment, the author studies the roleof genre in the teaching of writing.The object of study is the students in ClassOne and Class Two, Grade Three of Panjin Senior High School.The author analyzes the present theories in the teaching of writing.Then,the author briefly introduces the theories of genre。Genre analysis,therefore,aims at the studies of the communicative purposes of a discourse and the languageusing strategies.The author analyzes the present situation in English writingclassroom.Presently in China,English teachers often adopt the product-basedapproach to teach writing. However,this approach has its obvious weakpoints.Since grammar has a central role,the process skills,such as planninga text are given a relatively small role,and that knowledge and skills thatstudents bring to the classroom are undervalued. Compared with the productapproach,process approach put much emphasis on the writing process rather thanproduct.Classrooms dominated by this approach will be like this:The teacherstend to neglect or even abandon grammar.The focus is on quantity rather thanquality.The writers are encouraged to write down their ideas in any shape orform without worrying too much about correctness.There is a third approach:genre approach,which develops with the theories of genre.But it still has itsshortcomings.The process. Genre approach proposed by Badger and White(2000)ofStirling Universityin Britain is such a comprehensive model which is intendedto exert the effectiveness and minimize the disadvantages of one another.The author gives a concrete teaching model based on genre analysis in thewriting course.In this part,the author discusses the feasibility of applyingthis model to the teaching of writing and the steps may be employed in the teachingprocess,which includes analysis of atypical model text of agenre,imitatingjoint construction of the genre,writing skills training,imitatingwriting,independent writing and revising editing of the draft.The author compares and analyzes the results of the two surveys andresearches,which are carried out before and after the experimental teaching.Toconclude,process-genre approach has more advantages than the traditionalapproaches and is better at building up students’ confidence in writing andimproving their writing habits....
