The infrared optics plays a very important role in the development of modern optical technology. At the same time, the modern optical technology promotes the infrared optical imaging technology more extensive and universal application in the military, the civilian areas, including space surveillance sensors, airborne reconnaissance sensors, UAV electronics, medical infrared lasers, environmental pollution sensors and high resolution imaging sensors used in many various systems in commercial, medical, industrial and military. In this paper, the features of infrared optical systems, the design methods of the zoom systems and the applications of the zoom system in infrared optical system are studied. On the basis of analysising the effects of the atmospheric absorption and scattering for the infrared optical systems, the role of distance in infrared system has been studied. A kind of MWIR uncooled zoom lens has been designed, which working in3~5μm, the focal length between50and150mm and F/#of1.2, meanwhile the imaging quality evaluations at various focal lengths have been done. After studying the several thermal compensation as well as its application analysis, the reasonable athermal design at the temperature range between-40℃and+50℃for the designed system has been achieved. The analysis of system tolerance also shows that the system structure is reasonable and the image quality is good.
