With the rapid development of auto industry and the growing requirements ofenvironmental protection in the domestic, ternary catalytic converters, one of the keycomponents of environmental protection in the automobile exhaust system, has been widelyapplied in the field of automobile. In order to guarantee the effect of automobile emissionpurification, higher quality requirements for ternary catalytic converters were proposed in theengineering practice.The research object of this paper is the shell of ternary catalytic converters in autoexhaust system. The spinning machine of the shell of ternary catalytic converters wasindependently developed by using the machine design theory, finite element method andoptimal design theory. The whole spinning process of the shell of ternary catalytic converterswas simulated by MSC.Marc; the structure design, simulation analysis and parameteroptimization design of the key components were carried out on the basis of UG and ANSYSect. Finally, the spinning machine of the shell of ternary catalytic converters was used to trialnew products. The main research contents and conclusions of this paper are summarized asfollows:(1) The key technology of the whole spinning process for the shell of ternary catalyticconverters using MSC.Marc was proposed in this paper; finite element model of the shell ofternary catalytic converters was established; variation law of the spinning force and the maintransmission power of the spinning machine was determined, which established thefoundation mechanics for the design of the spinning machine.(2) According to the principle of spinning forming, the machine design theory as well asthe requirements of the shell of ternary catalytic converters, the whole machine structuredesign and calculation was completed, in which the spindle drive system, the servo feedsystem and the machine body were obtained. Advanced levels of the spindle drive systemand the auxiliary positioning device ect were achieved by compared with other similarmachines.(3) The finite element analysis of key components were carried out in ANSYS. Theresults show that the key components of the spinning machine have basicly met the structuralintensity and rigidity. However, the optimization space for the key components of thespinning machine still exists. Then, the static and dynamic performances of the arrangementmode of ribbed plate of the bed structure were comparatively analyzed in this paper, and thebest stiffened plate layout was finally obtained. (4) The parameterized model of the key components of the spinning machine wasestablished based on the optimization design theory of structural design. The requirements ofthe lightest quality, intensity and rigidity for the spindle box body and the machine body weresatisfied. The weight of spindle box body and the machine body reduced above15%after theoptimization design. The goal of lightweight design of the spinning device was achieved.(5) The spinning machine was employed in the trial production to test the rationality andpracticality. Uniform thickness distribution of the product was observed, the reduction rate ofthe thickness was less8%. In a word, the design of spinning machine was reached higherlevels of practical applicability and market value.
