As a textile structural composite perform, the three-dimensional fabric has good integrity and performance of profile modeling. The composite materials made by three-dimensional fabric have superior comprehensive mechanical properties, and have been widely applied in aerospace, defense industry, transportation, general machinery, building energy, etc. However, the technique of manufacture of3-D fabrics is difficult, the price is high, the output is low and sometimes it cannot satisfy the demand of composites structure very well. So how to the weave3-D integrated fabrics has become one of the most important tasks in composites field.The weaving techniques of3-D fabrics develop quickly. Now there gradually appear many weaving methods and3-D looms in the world, but most of them are manual or half automatic. The quality of the fabrics is difficult to guarantee, and the species of the3-D fabrics is limited.In order to produce the3-D fabric automatically, a high efficiency, automated3-D loom should be developed. The purpose of this paper is mainly for development of3-D loom and the main contents are as follows:1. The develop of a loom with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapierBased on the common rapier loom, according to the special requirements of weaving3-D fabric, the mechanisms of the shedding, weft insertion, beating-up, let-off and take-up are designed and improved. A multi-eye heddle and a group of rapiers picking are used at the same time, The innovative technology such as the servo motor to control the different movement of the heald frames, the parallel beating-up mechanism etc are also utilized. A loom with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapier which can woven high thickness fabric, complex organization structure fabric and a variety of special-shaped cross-section fabric is developed.2. The design of the looming draftDue to the adoption of the multi-eye heddle, the movement of the heald frame can be one or more heddle eye spacing. Therefore, the traditional looming draft can not be used on the loom with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapier. According to the weaving principle of the loom with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapier, the paper put forward two problems need to be solved when weaving on this loom machine:the organization of the same heddle eye layer and the stitching of the different heddle eye layers. Using different symbols to represent the different movements of the heald frames, the looming draft which can be used on the loom with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapier is designed and a16layers fabric which can be woven on this loom machine is shown.3the weaving imitation of the loom with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapierThe actual weaving of the fabrics waste time and energy and easy to make mistakes, so by the way of actual weaving to research the loom with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapier is obviously inappropriate. This paper imitates the weaving process of the loom with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapier in a virtual way by simply modeling and simulation. The weaving imitation contains the looming draft of the fabric, the movements of the heald frames and the cross section of the fabric. In this way, the control of the weaving process and the design of the looming draft can be simple and convenient.This paper develops a loom machine with multi-eye heddle and multi-rapier which can weave3-D fabric, designs the fabrics which can be woven on this loom and imitates the weaving process of the loom. The researches of this paper make the automatically producing of the3-D fabrics be possible. It is a step foreward in the field of textile structural composites.
