Sustainable fashion is a topic that has been appearing in recent years, for some companies is an irrelevant issue, but for others it’s a philosophy that they use in the every day. Is difficult to establish which fiber is the most appropriate for making sustainable clothing, since cotton has disadvantages such as high levels of contamination valuable resources like water. At the same time, synthetic fibers such as polyester, are highly environment damaging. The author makes a research on sustainable issues, including new fibers developed at the global level, where China is a pioneer, but suggests that in countries like Colombia, it is also possible to develop some of these fibers, this is the case of bamboo, a plant that grows in Colombia as well. The author also includes a study of Colombian artisanal silk, which is a sustainable fiber also because minimal amounts of pesticides are used in the cultivation of mulberry, which is the food of worms. This natural fiber is dyed with natural elements, which do not pollute the water. And also includes current trends to make more sustainable use of resources and recycling of fibers, as well as some methods used for cutting patterns, and recycling disposed fabrics in factories, as they throw many meters of new fabrics. For the development of a sustainable industry, not just fibers are important but people involved in the industry. That’s why the author uses a group of Colombian indigenous, the Wayuu tribe, for the development of the collection; they develop woven tissues made of cotton. In the study is included the traditional usage of natural fibers, and processes as well as current ways they use. There is also includes a research in the meaning of the same tissues, its colors, shapes, graphics, as they have meanings of everyday life and traditional aspects of their culture. Working with vulnerable cultures is also a form of sustainable fashion if fair treatment and working conditions are favorable, while paying fair wages. That’s why the author wants to present to the world part of its own culture, using fabrics in the collection but changing in a new way.
