With the rapid development of industry,plenty of slag was ejected into environment,which not only occupy much land, but also pollutes the environments. Therefore,developmentof new technologies to recycle and convert waste materials into reusable materials is criticallyimportant for protection of our environment and sustainable development of our society.Various types of waste materials like fly ash generated from coal and oil-fired electric powerstations, and fly ash from power plant urban solid waste incinerators, granulated blast furnaceslag,steel industry dust, sewage sludge and petroleum effluent treatment plant sludge,havebeen used to manufacture brick and other construction materials.The main ingredients of Wafangzi manganese iron slag in Chaoyang City, LiaoningProvince are SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, MnO2and Fe2O3, which are closed to the compositionsof glass-ceramics. MnO2and Fe2O3in the manganese iron slag is an effective nucleationagent in the glass-ceramics system. So it is a promising method to prepare glass-ceramicsmaterials by using the manganese iron slag.In this paper, manganese iron slag and waste glass were used as raw materials togetherwith mineral materials such as feldspar,silica, dolomite,calcite,fluorite and soda, to prepareglass-ceramics by melting method. Using chemical analysis method to analyzed themanganese iron slag quantitatively.DTA was used to ascertain the heat-treatment temperaturesystem, and XRD together with SEM to characterize the phase composition andmicrostructure of the glass-ceramics,and some other physical properties of this material werealso examined, such as hardness,density, flexural strength and acidproof alkali.The effect ofheat-treatment parameters and the content of the manganese iron slag in raw material toglassmelting,performance,crystalling phase and microstructure were discussed.The XRD showed the major crystalline of the glass-ceramics were CaSiO3andCa·Mg(SiO3)2. Samples of the SEM analysis shows that the glass-ceramics is mostlyprismatic crystals, sheets and granular, weaving structure, particle size uniform.Research shows that heat treatment parameters have obviously influence to performance of the glass-ceramics. The optimal heat treatment parameters in this paper are:annealed at570℃,nucleated at720℃for1h,and then crystallized at920℃for1h.The physical properties of glass-ceramics,such as flexural strength(135MPa),hardness(700~1300Kgf/mm2) and density(2.8g/cm3) are superior to ceramic tile and naturalstone material, strong acidproof alkali and without radioactivity. In the manganese iron slagglass-ceramics, the mass fraction of manganese iron slag can achieve50%. With high socialbenefits and economic benefits.
