Brake system is one of the necessary part of the hoist, and it is the most critical and the last security barrier of the hoisting machine. The brake reliability is directly related to the safe operation of the hoist. Along with the hoist capacity increased, there have been several mine hoists which skidded or vibrated in their running, resulting in brake failure and serious impact on the increased security. In this paper, the main research on the brake failure as followed:(1) Based on the failure of appearance of the brake, a qualitative analysis of reasons for the failure of the brake was done;(2) A bottom-up modeling of a failure of the disc brake overall structure was made by using the SolidWorks software; then the establishment of finite element model of its key parts were made by using ANSYS and Solidworks Simulation software, and do the quantitative impact analysis on the strength and stiffness of the key structure;(3) In order to ensure that the brake does not fail to target, a rear disc brake structure scheme is presented, and do the research on the type and parameters of the brake bearing and brake cylinder structures;(4) Modal analysis of the overall structure of the new program disc brakes was made, and research the influence of the brakes resonance frequencies and mode shapes on the brake failure;(5) A new brake was trailed based on improvement program, a set of experiments were made to research the influence of the fuel tank of oil spills on the brake. And the bearing maximum stress and strain was measured in the extreme limit of power case. The experiment results show that the new brake cylinder oil spill does not lead to brake failure, and the strength and stiffness of the new bearings in the extreme limit power meet the safety requirements. The research in this paper has a certain practical value as which could improve the braking safety performance.
