In this paper, according to chemical intumescent flame retardant mechanism, TPO flameretardant composites were designed with TPO served as matrix. This thesis reviewed the typesof flame retardant in the world and the research of TPO flame retardant materials. Flameretardant properties of TPO chemical intumescent flame retardant were studied; The effect ofthe structure of char layer and intumescent layer on flame retardant properties were studied byOM. The analysis of TG for thermal degradation behaviors and thermal degradation kineticswere discussed; At the same time, mechanical properties and rheological behaviors wereinvestigated. The results were obtained as follows:As air source and acid source in TPO/ADP system, LOI and the grade of Vertical burningwere improved with incorporation of ADP. When ADP were70phr, LOI reached25.9%, andcame up to FV-0by Vertical burning test. When Starch as carbon source was mixed withTPO/ADP system, there were not black smoke and dropping during burning. MCA assynergetic flame retardant, LOI and the grade of Level burning were improved, When MCAwere15phr, the material was not burnt.By the analysis and testing of OM, the images indicated ADP is a finer air source, it canaccelerate lacunaris intumescent layer, but no integrated charry laye. Starch was mixed, charlayer became compact from intumescent and loosen, improved the quality of char in system.Added MCA into system, the dimension of the aperture was larger with more addition ofMCA, presented honeycomb form, accelerated the capability of producing obstruct charry.Thermal degradation behaviors of TPO, TPO/ADP and TPO/ADP/Starch/MCA wereanalyzed with Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method and Kissinger method. It can be concluded that heatstability properties and residual were improved, the activation energies is higher than TPO. Itis no effect on heat stability properties with incorporation of starch and synergetic flameretardant. It can be educed activation energies and numerical value were adjacent with twomethods.The rheological behavior and toughness of system were reduced with increasing additionof ADP. But module was decline; Yield phenomena appeared with incorporation of Starch, The rheological behavior of system were reduced has been delay; And then MCA improvedimmensely the rheological behavior.Comparing with structures and properties of chemical intumescent flame retardantsystem, it was found that flame retardant properties and the quality in charry laye ofcomposites could be improved, then mechanical properties and rheological behaviors wererelieved.
