As composite materials with high performance, glass fiber reinforced materials were widely used in agriculture, industry, military, aerospace and other fields. Glass fiber chopped strand was the main raw material of manufacturing this kind of reinforced material. With the rapid development of glass fiber industry, the demand for glass fiber chopped strand was increasing. Because of the poor glass fiber chopped equipment, short tool life, low efficiency and high production cost, the development of glass fiber industry had met the bottleneck. To solve these problems had a significant meaning to the development of the glass fiber industry in our country.In this study, aiming at the fiber glass chopped equipment, some improvement suggestions and optimal schemes were provided for the glass fiber chopped equipment via the theoretical study of glass fiber chopped mechanism, the explicit dynamic simulation analysis based on ANSYS/LS-DYNA, the actual short cutting contrast experiment and the design of the detection system based on digital image processing technology.The main beneficial conclusions and results achieved in this study were:the glass fiber bend-cutting model was established which laid a theoretical basis for the optimization of short cutting equipment; tool loading could be reduced by setting grooves on the compression roller to take advantages of the low bending resistance of glass fiber; the tool life would be prolonged by properly adjusting the entrance angle and cutting depth; the optimum selection range of the wedge angle was determined; it was pointed out that the short cutting tool material should pay more attention to the reasonable proportion of the hardness and toughness after the short cutting comparative experiment; the image detection program of glass fiber chopped rate was designed and achieved good results.
