Objective:This study was guided by the following objectives to determine whether or not sperm function tests have any significance on recurrent pregnancy loss groups. It assesses the subject’s extent of knowledge, or the lack thereof, and perceived risks influence the level of the outcome.Research design:In comparison with20proven fertile volunteers, sperm function parameters like Hypo-osmotic swelling (HOS), Acrosomal Reaction (AR), Nuclear Chromatin Decondensation (NCD) and total Leukocyte count (TLC) along with semen analysis were assessed in vitro from75male partners of couples with a history of idiopathic RPL.Setting:Infertility clinic and andrology laboratory at Colombo General Hospital incorporation with the Kaluthara and Gampaha General Hospital Gyn/Obs departments. Results:Semen samples from the idiopathic RPL group showed that the mean test scores were below the normal scores in all three parameters. Among male partners5.4%had varicocele,30.7%had infection,1.3%immunological and genetic abnormality. Sperm motility, viability and sperm function tests were significantly lower in RPL group as compared to the control group (P=0.000).Conclusion:Male factors may be a possible contributing factor towards RPL. Both the partners should be evaluated and treated simultaneously in order to achieve a desirable outcome.
