[Objective] Study about the personality characteristics and clinical psychological conditions of adult and adolescent orthodontic patients and analysis of psychosocial factors and malocclusion related factors of orthodontic patients’ psychological feature. Investigate the change of orthodontic patients’ psychological feature before and after the intervention, to explore the feasible way and meaning of psychological intervention in orthodontic clinical work. Provide the basis and guidance in order to ensure the smooth progress of the orthodontic treatment and the orthodontic clinical psychological assessment and intervention.[Methods] Using Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and self-designed psychological questionnaire, collect each150valid questionnaires of before treatment, the treatment of orthodontic patients and individual normal occlusion, to compare the Eysenck Personality tendencies and clinical psychological status’ difference among the above three groups and different age groups, and analysis of related factors. Randomly select30patients before orthodontic treatment which being obviously different from the individual normal occlusion group’s clinical psychological state, in accordance with the procedure for psychological intervention, by supportive psychotherapy, combined with cognitive therapy and progressive neuromuscular relaxation training theory, through psychological intervention for six months, to investigate whether psychological intervention affect the psychological characteristics of orthodontic patients on self-control study.[Results]1. Orthodontic patients is higher psychoticism and neuroticism tendency, lower self-evaluation of appearance, high expectation on the orthodontic results and more need to establish a good doctor-patient communication than the individual normal occlusion group. The personality characteristics and clinical psychological conditions of orthodontic patients during orthodontic treatment remain stable relatively. 2. The different age groups vary in the personality characteristics and clinical psychological conditions. Many factors affect the clinical psychological conditions, mainly including gender, living area, education, monthly family income, whether single-parent families, Angle malocclusion type, malocclusion severity and whether Skeletal malocclusion.3. There is a positive correlation between need of doctor-patient communication and patients’psychoticism, between self-evaluation of appearance and neuroticism, between the expectation on the orthodontic results and neuroticism. There is a negative correlation between estimated cooperation of patients and intro-extroversion personality.4. The patients’personality characteristics are relatively stable after psychological intervention. In clinical psychological condition, the patient’s self-evaluation of appearance changed for the better, the doctor-patient communication improved, cooperation of adolescent patients increased, and the adult patients’expectation on the orthodontic results declined relatively.[Conclusions]1. There are differences in personality characteristics and clinical psychological conditions between orthodontic patients and individual normal occlusion group, and among orthodontic patients of different ages. The orthodontic patient’s psychological characteristics is relatively stable during treatment.2. The patient’s clinical psychological conditions have related to the personality characteristics. More complex factors affect the clinical psychological conditions, such as gender, living areas, education, malocclusion type, malocclusion severity and so on.3. Psychological intervention can improve patients’clinical psychological conditions, but the specific implementation of ways and means remains to be further explored and researched.4. Investigation and assessment of the orthodontic patients’ psychological characteristics and psychological intervention have positive significance for ensuring the smooth and orderly orthodontic treatment and reducing the number of doctor-patient conflicts.
